Biomarkers

Microalbumin/Creatinine Ratio

What it is

This test measures the small amount of albumin protein that leaks into urine relative to creatinine, detecting kidney stress at a level far more sensitive than a standard urinalysis can pick up.

Why it matters

Healthy kidneys keep albumin, a protein, out of urine almost entirely, so even a small amount leaking through is one of the earliest detectable signs of kidney stress, often years before creatinine or eGFR on the CMP move outside a normal range. It's particularly relevant for anyone with elevated blood sugar, insulin resistance, or high blood pressure, since kidney stress frequently develops silently alongside those conditions. Catching it early, while it's still just a ratio and not yet a diagnosis, is exactly the point of including it in Signal rather than waiting for it to show up elsewhere.
