Vitamin B1

Also known as Thiamine

What it is

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is a nutrient essential for converting the food you eat into usable energy and for normal nerve function.

Why it matters

Thiamine deficiency is uncommon in the general population but is disproportionately associated with high alcohol intake, since alcohol interferes with thiamine absorption, and with restrictive diets or certain gastrointestinal conditions. Because thiamine plays a direct role in brain energy metabolism, deficiency has been studied in connection with cognitive symptoms, which is part of why it's grouped with Source's cognitive risk markers rather than the general nutrient panel. It's a low-cost marker to check and a directly correctable one when it comes back low.
