Why Regular Blood Testing Matters More Than Your Annual Physical
A physical gets scheduled once a year, a nurse draws a handful of vials, and a few days later a message shows up saying everything is "normal." That word does a lot of quiet work. It's entirely possible for a marker to have been drifting for eight months before that draw, still technically inside a normal range on the day it was measured, and headed somewhere you'd want to know about a lot sooner than next year's appointment.
What a single point in time can't tell you
Fasting insulin is a good example of exactly this. It's one of the earliest markers to move when insulin resistance starts developing, often 10 to 15 years before HbA1c rises enough to flag pre-diabetes on a standard physical. The reason for that lag isn't mysterious: as insulin resistance builds, the pancreas compensates by secreting more insulin to keep blood glucose looking normal. That compensation is effective for years, which is exactly why HbA1c can stay in range while insulin itself is already climbing well outside it. If you're only testing once a year, you have exactly one data point to compare against exactly one data point from twelve months ago, and that compensation mechanism is precisely what keeps the more visible marker quiet while the real story is happening one layer underneath it.
From a point to a slope
Say you start a new supplement, change your training, or clean up your sleep. Test again three to six months later and you have something to actually compare against: did that specific marker move, or is it sitting exactly where it was. Wait a full year instead, and even if the marker did change, you've got no way to attribute it to anything, too much else happened in the meantime to isolate what caused what. Testing on a shorter cycle doesn't just produce more numbers, it turns a single point into a slope, and a slope is the only shape of data that can actually tell you whether something you're doing is working.
Where consistency beats depth
This is also why running a lighter panel consistently tends to beat running one comprehensive panel once. Any single blood value carries some amount of natural day-to-day variability, hydration, sleep, recent meals all nudge a result slightly. One measurement can't distinguish a genuine trend from that normal noise. Repeated measurement is what does; the pattern across three or four draws is far more informative than any single one of them, no matter how many markers that single draw covers. A Surface-tier panel run every few months will tell you more about your own trajectory than one deep panel run in isolation.
