DHEA-S

Also known as Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate

What it is

DHEA-S is a hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands that serves as a building block your body converts into other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen.

Why it matters

DHEA-S levels naturally decline with age, and because it's a precursor hormone rather than an end product, it's often read alongside the rest of the hormone panel rather than in isolation. It's relevant to energy, mood, and libido, and unusually high or low levels can sometimes point toward an adrenal issue worth investigating further with a physician. As one of the more stable hormones in the body day to day, it's a useful baseline against which more variable hormones can be interpreted.
