Estradiol

Also known as E2

What it is

Estradiol (E2) is the primary form of estrogen in the body and plays a central role in reproductive health, bone density, and cardiovascular health.

Why it matters

Estradiol fluctuates significantly across the menstrual cycle and declines substantially during the menopausal transition, which is why unexplained changes in mood, sleep, or menstrual regularity are often worth checking against it. It also has effects well beyond reproduction, including bone density maintenance and cardiovascular protection, which is part of why the years around menopause carry different health considerations. Because estradiol interacts closely with FSH, LH, and progesterone, it's typically most informative read as part of the full hormone panel rather than alone.
