LDL Particle Size & Fractionation

Also known as NMR Lipid Fractionation, LDL-P

What it is

NMR lipid fractionation breaks your LDL cholesterol down into the actual particles that carry it, reporting particle number, particle size, and how much is carried in small, dense particles versus larger, more buoyant ones.

Why it matters

A standard LDL number is an estimate of total cholesterol carried inside LDL particles, but it says nothing about how many particles there are or how large they are. Two people can have identical LDL numbers while one of them is carrying mostly small, dense particles that squeeze into artery walls more easily, and the other mostly large, buoyant ones that don't. A normal-looking LDL number doesn't automatically mean the particle pattern underneath it is favorable, which is exactly what NMR fractionation is built to resolve.
