Ferritin

What it is

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron inside your cells, and measuring it in blood is the standard way to estimate your body's total iron reserves.

Why it matters

Ferritin can point in two different directions, which is what makes it worth tracking rather than assuming: a low result is typically an early sign of iron deficiency, often before anemia shows up on a CBC, while a high result can reflect iron overload or, just as commonly, can rise simply because ferritin behaves as an inflammatory marker independent of iron status. That dual nature is exactly why it's most useful read alongside the rest of a panel, including CBC and, when iron status is in question, Iron & TIBC in Signal, rather than in isolation.
