Iron & TIBC
Also known as Total Iron-Binding Capacity
What it is
Iron and Total Iron-Binding Capacity, along with the percent saturation calculated from them, together describe how much iron is circulating in your blood and how much of your blood's iron-carrying capacity is actually being used.
Why it matters
Iron status is a two-sided problem: too little leads to iron-deficiency anemia, while too much, seen in conditions like hereditary hemochromatosis, can build up in organs over years. Iron and TIBC read together are more informative than either alone, since TIBC tends to rise when iron stores are low and fall when they're high, the opposite direction of iron itself. This panel is typically read alongside ferritin, since ferritin reflects stored iron while iron and TIBC reflect what's actively circulating, and the two together give a fuller picture than either provides on its own.
Iron & TIBC is one of the markers in Zaro's Signal panel and every tier above it.
