Fasting Insulin

What it is

Fasting insulin measures how much insulin your pancreas is producing to keep your blood sugar in a normal range after an overnight fast.

Why it matters

Glucose is often the last number to move in the development of insulin resistance. Years before fasting glucose or HbA1c cross into prediabetic territory, the pancreas frequently compensates by producing more and more insulin to hold glucose steady, a phase a standard glucose test can't see because it's specifically designed to look normal. Fasting insulin is one of the earliest measurable signs that this compensation is happening, which is why it's typically read alongside glucose rather than instead of it: a normal glucose result with an elevated insulin result tells a very different story than a normal result on both.
