Uric Acid
What it is
Uric acid is a waste product created when your body breaks down purines, compounds found naturally in the body and in certain foods, and is normally filtered out by the kidneys.
Why it matters
Elevated uric acid is best known as the direct cause of gout, where crystals form in joints and cause sudden, severe pain, most classically in the big toe. Beyond gout, sustained elevation has also been studied in connection with kidney stones and, more broadly, as a marker that tracks with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. It's a marker that responds to both diet (purine-rich foods like organ meat, certain seafood, and alcohol) and metabolic health more broadly, which is why it's included alongside the rest of Surface's metabolic core rather than tested in isolation.
Uric Acid is one of the markers in Zaro's Surface panel and every tier above it.
